When Kings Dominion reopens from its seasonal closure in spring 2025, a long-running coaster will be absent from the Doswell, Va. park’s lineup. The Anaconda roller coaster is now permanently closed. A Kings Dominion spokesperson confirmed the closure and removal of the attraction to local Richmond station WWBT, which reported the news on Dec. 27, 2024. The ride has been operating since 1991.

Anaconda reached speeds of 50 mph and was the “first looping roller coaster in the world to feature an underwater tunnel,” according to Kings Dominion.

As park guests say goodbye to Anaconda, they can say hello to Rapterra, a new coaster opening at Kings Dominion in 2025. Rapterra is currently running test cycles at the park. Another Kings Dominion coaster, Intimidator 305, will be renamed “Pantherian” with the onset of the 2025 season.

The news of Anaconda’s permanent closure came without any prior warning to park guests. King Dominion’s list of temporary/scheduled closures still incorrectly lists Anaconda as just “closed for season.” Anaconda is the third roller coaster at a Six Flags-owned park to close in the last two months without the company telling guests beforehand. It follows a similar pattern as Kingda Ka at Six Flags Great Adventure and Nighthawk at Carowinds, both of which closed unceremoniously without notice.

In other coaster closure news, Universal recently announced Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit will close in 2025 while Skyplex confirmed the cancellation of Skyscraper on International Drive, originally announced to be the world’s tallest roller coaster.

    1. Thank you for reading. There may have been rumors prior to now, but park management had not announced the closure until last week.
