Top Thrill 2 closed until 2025

Top Thrill 2 will not reopen in 2024, Cedar Point announced on Aug. 23, 2024. The roller coaster — which unexpectedly closed one week after its grand opening last May — is expected to reopen in 2025.

We sincerely appreciate your patience while Top Thrill 2’s manufacturer, Zamperla, has been working diligently to complete a mechanical modification to the coaster vehicles.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer will not be able to complete the modifications needed in time to reopen the coaster in 2024. We are extremely disappointed that we cannot open the ride this season, but remain committed to delivering a reliable, consistent, and unparalleled coaster experience for our guests in 2025. In the meantime, please accept our sincere apology for the disappointment and inconvenience.

A landing page on Cedar Point’s website titled “Top Thrill 2 Update” displays the same statement.

Cedar Point operates a seasonal calendar, with its annual reopening day usually occuring in May. The park’s 2024 operating season continues through Nov. 2.

The coaster’s ‘extended closure’

On May 4, 2024, Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio officially unveiled Top Thrill 2, an overhaul of the former Top Thrill Dragster roller coaster boasting speeds of up to 120 mph and a height of 420 feet.

Just seven days later, on the morning of May 11, Cedar Point posted on X, “Top Thrill 2 will not open today. We apologize for the inconvenience.”

The following day, the park shared that the coaster would again not operate, issuing a longer statement that read in part:

Top Thrill 2 is currently experiencing an extended closure as Zamperla (the ride’s manufacturer) completes a mechanical modification to the ride’s vehicles. Once the modification is complete, Zamperla, the Cedar Point maintenance and operations teams, and our third-party ride inspection partner will conduct a thorough review before approving both the modification and the reopening of the ride.

Though we cannot yet confirm a reopening date, we will provide updates at cedarpoint.com.

In short, Top Thrill 2 was closed for the time being — and hasn’t reopened since.

The coaster’s predecessor, Top Thrill Dragster, closed in 2021 after a small piece of metal struck the head of a guest waiting in line. Following that incident, Cedar Point closed Top Thrill Dragster for investigation and ultimately retired the coaster permanently.

  1. Why not state the real issue? The public knows more about the Boeing 737’s faults and recalls on our vehicles than what they are telling us. “Mechanical Modifications” doesn’t sit well with me, and I want to know the details because we have been told rides were fixed (SOB & WWL) when, in fact, they still had flaws.
