Disney’s “The Art of Moana 2” by Kalikohua Hurley is a welcome addition to the acclaimed Art of Disney series. It offers readers an exclusive glimpse into the creative journey behind Walt Disney Animation Studios’ feature film “Moana 2.” The book takes readers from the island of Motunui across the expansive ocean alongside Moana and her companions, showcasing the intricate artistry that brings their adventure to life.

The book begins with a preface by Jennifer Lee, the former chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios and an executive producer of the film. In it, Lee remarks, “We asked ourselves: What if Motunui was only one island among many — a piece of a larger village?” This question prompted the team to take Moana and crew on a journey across the entire Pacific Ocean, which opened up a world of new locations, colors, and characters to add to the story.

Accompanying these visuals are exclusive interviews with the creative team, providing insights into the artistic processes and decisions that shaped the film. I particularly enjoyed reading about the small decisions the artists made to age-up all of the characters, including minor ones like Pua and Heihei. My favorite quote from the book comes from Ryan Green, head of story, which says, “The sun still rises in the east, water still flows downhill, and Heihei is still stupid.”

The perfect book for Disney fans, but also artists and filmmakers
