Movie review: ‘Heart Eyes’ is campy, bloody, cheesy, and romantic

If you’re into campy, bloody, cheesy, romantic horror films, boy, do I got a movie for you… “Heart Eyes” combines both romance and horror, making for one of the most over-the-top date night flicks I’ve seen.

I’m not entirely sure I have much to say about “Heart Eyes.” When the trailer dropped a few months ago, I found myself fairly excited. I tend to really enjoy clumsy slasher films that have creative kills, and everything the trailer had shown seemed to be just that. What I didn’t account for: filmmakers not only went hard in making a “campy” horror film, but in creating an overly sappy romance.

While I enjoyed the over-the-top antics of “Heart Eyes,” I found there were times when I couldn’t figure out if it was purposely bad or it was actually just bad — which seems nitpicky, especially since the majority of the film is making fun of both bad horror tropes and bad romance tropes altogether. That being said, when the film is firing on all cylinders, it really works. The entire theater was bought in to the cheesy-ness and laughing with the movie. The film tends to work the best when it focuses on the horror aspect of the film, which it takes too long to get to.

The beginning of “Heart Eyes” drags, possibly due to the romance aspect of the film. They needed to set up the romance so that when the random rom-com moments happen while a Heart Eyes Killer is chasing them, it would play better. Though in the end, it works in their favor because a lot of the moments in the back half of the film work. It just takes a little too long to get going for a swift 90-minute movie.

Other than that, “Heart Eyes” is a pretty typical campy slasher flick: fun kills, funny moments, and bad writing (purposely … maybe). If you’re looking for a fun rom-com to take your date to on Valentine’s Day and you don’t have a weak stomach, “Heart Eyes” is the easy choice.

SCORE: 3/5

“Heart Eyes”  is rated R and is in theaters now! There is one post-credit scene.
