‘Dog Man’: Pete Davidson interview + where to meet Dog Man at Universal

Pete Davidson talks his “Dog Man” villain character, Petey — and hopes for a “Dog Man 2” — in an exclusive interview. Plus, learn where to meet Dog Man at Universal Orlando.

‘Dog Man’ interviews with Pete Davidson and Dav Pilkey

“Dog Man” is now in theaters from DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures, and our 10-year-old reporter Chase Landell got to speak with one of the movie’s stars, Pete Davidson, on Jan. 31, 2025 in New York City. The “Saturday Night Live” alum voices the film’s villain, Petey the cat.

In shaping Petey’s voice, Davidson was inspired by a classic Universal performance. “I watched a lot of Jim Carrey stuff,” Davidson said. “You know the Grinch movie that he did? That’s, like, my favorite movie ever, so I just tried to copy as much Grinch stuff as I can.”

In the film, Petey is the adversary of the titular part-dog, part-man hero. “Voicing Petey was fun,” Davidson continued. “It’s fun to be a villain sometimes. You get to scream and stuff. He’s also interesting because he has a soft side, which was super nice.”

What voice role does Davidson hope to take on next? “Hopefully Dog Man 2, right?” he says with a smile. “That would be pretty cool for us.”

DreamWorks’ “Dog Man” is an adaptation of a children’s book series by Dav Pilkey, the same author behind “Captain Underpants” (which DreamWorks also adapted as a film, back in 2017).

“I started drawing Dog Man when I was in second grade,” Pilkey told 10-year-old reporter Chase. “I never thought that it would turn into a movie, that I’d get to meet so many great people, work with so many talented people. It’s the best thing ever.”

Where to meet Dog Man at Universal Orlando

Guests at Universal Orlando Resort can meet Dog Man in person. Fans can find him in DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida; specifically, at an outdoor area known as DreamWorks Character Zone.

Finding Dog Man’s character appearances times is something of a challenge. His appearances are sporadic, and they aren’t listed in the Universal Orlando app. If you stop by DreamWorks Character Zone, ask a team member in the area if and when Dog Man will be out on the day of your visit. That’s the best way to track him down for the time being.

‘Dog Man’ menu at Universal Orlando

A special “Dog Man” food item is now available on the menu of DreamWorks Imagination Café, a quick-service restaurant counter located just outside of DreamWorks Land at Universal Studios Florida. Guests can try Ruff Mix Mac & Cheese, described as “creamy mac & cheese with picadillo beef inside a Ruff Mix dog can.” It’s $13. Perhaps it would make an appropriate dipping can for a Shrekzel.
