The parks — located in Bowie, Md., near Baltimore and Washington, D.C. — “will be marketed for redevelopment as part of Six Flags’ ongoing portfolio optimization program,” a Six Flags press release stated on May 1, 2025.

The final operating day for Six Flags America prior to it closing is currently listed as Nov. 2, 2025, which will conclude with the Fright Fest haunt event after hours. Hurricane Harbor’s final season will begin May 31 and continue select dates through Sept. 6.

Real estate company CBRE will market the nearly 500-acre property for sale. Six Flags will host an “Investor Day” on May 20, 2025 to share details about the company’s “long-term strategy.”

Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are two of the currently 42 parks in Six Flags’ portfolio following the corporation’s merge with Cedar Fair in 2024.

Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are “not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” said Richard A. Zimmerman, Six Flags president and CEO. “After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”

‘This was a difficult decision’

“This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it will have on our Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor park associates and guests,” Zimmerman continued. 70 employees are full-time with the closing parks.

Six Flags America includes eight roller coasters, including DC Comics-themed attractions such as Batwing Coaster and Superman: Ride of Steel. Just last year, Six Flags America opened a new land called SteamTown with new and refurbished attractions.

Special events part of Six Flags America’s final season include ¡Viva La Fiesta!, Juneteenth Celebration, Star-Spangled Nights, Kids Boo Fest, and Fright Fest.

Six Flags’ portfolio evaluation

The stated goal of the portfolio optimization project was to “to evaluate the potential divestiture of non-core assets to help reduce leverage,” as shared in November 2024.

In February, Zimmerman stated, “We have completed our initial review, having identified properties that are less strategic and critical to our long-term growth objectives — properties that we would consider divesting under the right circumstances. These include some of the smaller, non-core parks as well as excess undeveloped land that isn’t critical to future expansion plans.”

Though Six Flags America will close permanently, the corporation opted for another route for Six Flags Over Georgia, choosing instead to purchase the park’s shares from its other owners to acquire full ownership of the Atlanta-area park by 2027.
